Market Creation

Markets on Conviction represent questions about real-world events. Each market defines a set of possible outcomes that users can trade on.

Market Types

Binary Market

A binary market has exactly two outcomes: YES and NO.

Example: "Will Bitcoin reach $100K by March 2025?"

  • Outcomes: YES / NO

Binary markets are the most common type and are best suited for straightforward yes-or-no questions.

Categorical Market

A categorical market has three or more outcomes.

Example: "Which team will win the 2025 Champions League?"

  • Outcomes: Team A / Team B / Team C / Other

Categorical markets allow trading on multiple possibilities within a single event.

Market Categories

Markets can be organized into the following categories:

  • Crypto — Cryptocurrency prices, protocol events, blockchain milestones
  • Sports — Game outcomes, tournament winners, player performance
  • Politics — Elections, policy decisions, geopolitical events
  • Entertainment — Awards, media events, cultural milestones
  • Science — Scientific discoveries, space events, technology breakthroughs
  • Finance — Traditional finance, economic indicators, corporate events
  • Other — Anything that does not fit the above categories

Market Lifecycle

Every market goes through the following stages:

  1. PENDING — The market has been created and is awaiting activation. No trading is available yet.
  2. ACTIVE — Trading is open. Users can place buy and sell orders on any outcome.
  3. LOCKED — Trading is closed. The event is imminent or has occurred, and the market is awaiting resolution.
  4. RESOLVED — The outcome has been determined. Winners can redeem their shares for $1.00 each.
  5. CANCELLED — The market has been voided. All collateral is returned to participants.

On-Chain Registration

Each market is backed by smart contracts on ZetaChain:

  • A unique condition ID is generated for each market on the Conditional Token Framework (CTF) smart contract.
  • Outcome tokens (shares) are ERC-1155 tokens on ZetaChain, meaning each outcome share is a distinct token within the CTF contract.
  • The CTF Exchange contract handles the orderbook, order matching, and settlement.
